Golf Slicing For Dummies

If you find yourself purposely aiming to the left of the fairway you’re probably already familiar with the infamous golf slice. In fact, you’re probably visiting this website because you’re too familiar with it. You’re not alone! Never intentional and often hit, it is responsible for thrown clubs and stomped on hats everywhere. The golf slice is the most common miss-hit among amateur golfers.

Your objective is to get your handicap into the single digits and consistently make par. The golf slice is your enemy.  What does Sun Tzu of “The Art of War” recommend? “Know Your Enemy.” So while you may think you already know what the golf slice is, and you’re probably right, let’s get scientific and really define golf slicing.

The Simple DefinitionGolf Slice

A golf slice is a type of shot where the golf ball starts by flying to the left of the target and then curves radically to the right (for right-handed golfers; the opposite for left-handers). It curves like a banana; hence it is often called the “banana ball.”

The More Scientific Definition

A golf slice is a shot where the club draws across the face of the golf ball from far right to near left causing the ball to spin clockwise (for right-handed golfers). This creates lower air pressure on one side of the ball causing it to curve to the right midair. The result is an uncontrolled shot that suffers both loss in accuracy and distance.

FACT: A downswing speed of 100 MPH imparts a rotation on the ball of about 60 rotations per second. The initial momentum of the ball carries it straight, but as the ball slows the spin factor takes over and causes the ball to curve.

There are 3 basic types of golf slices. These include the Pull Slice, the Regular Slice and the Push Slice.

  1. Pull Slice- starts to the left and then curves back to the right (the most common)
  2. Regular Slice- starts out straight and then curves to the right
  3. Push slice- starts to the right and then curves further to the right

Golf Slice TypesNot to worry, all 3 types of slices will be fixed if you follow the golf slice tips given on this website as they are all rooted in the same faults.

What It Isn’t

Now that you know what a golf slice is lets quickly touch on two other golf shots that can be confused with the slice.

The Fade

The fade is also a shot that curves to the right. However, the main difference is that it is intentional. Whereas a slice involves a large uncontrolled curve that lands the ball far to the right of the target, a fade is a small controlled curve from left to right that lands the ball at the target. This is a technique for advanced golfers. The opposite of a fade is called a draw (the same thing but the ball curves from right to left).

The Hook

The hook, on the other hand, is also a miss-hit like the slice. Although instead of the ball curving to the right it curves to the left. This is less common but is caused by creating a counter-clockwise spin on the ball.
