Four Golf Swing Drills That Will Correct Slice Shots

So you’ve been reading through our site and have been gaining an incredible amount of knowledge on how to correct slice shots. Next time you step on the course you’ll be like a modern day Arnold Palmer, right? Not so fast!  As nice as it would be, it just doesn’t happen that way. What you need to do now is take the time to get your body to do what it supposed to and build muscle memory. The best way to do this is to practice some of the excellent golf swing drills described below.

Drill #1 “Swing and Freeze”

This first drill is quite simple and designed to help you get proper rotation in your swing. What normally happens in the case of a slice is the heel of the club “beats” or “out-races” the toe of the club to the ball. Most people simply don’t rotate the clubface enough during their downswing or do it too late. The rotation of the clubhead needs to start before impact and finish just after impact.

InstructionsTake some practice swings and keep the thought in your mind that the toe needs to catch up to the heel of the club. As you practice swing freeze your position just after impact. Now double-check that your right hand (for right-handed golfers) is above your left hand. If it isn’t than your hands aren’t rotating enough as you swing.

Drill #2 “The Waggle”

This is another simple golf swing drill that can be performed at home since it doesn’t require hitting the ball. It’s referred to as the waggle. This drill will help you develop more of an inside path to the ball to fix the outside-to-inside swing path and correct slice problems.

Instructions: Set two balls on the ground one on the target line and another about six inches inside that ball. Now loop the clubhead over the outside ball on the backswing and then over the inside ball on the downswing. Repeating this motion will help you get the right feel.

Drill #3 “The Split Grip Drill”

This third drill is another drill to help you get a sense for rotating the clubhead through the hitting area and closing the clubface at impact.

Instructions: Start by gripping the club normally, than slide your ungloved hand down the club one or two inches.  Now take some three-quarter practice swings. You will notice your hands fell very active and it’s easy to roll your hands through the impact zone. Try to simulate a finishing position where your left hand is completely rotated and your right arm is extended.  After practicing this you will notice you have a better sense for rotating the club through the hitting area when you go back to your normal swing.

Drill #4 “Three Tees”

This final drill is another goodie for fixing the outside-to-inside swing path and to correct slice shots. All you need is three tees and you’re good to go.

Instructions: Begin by placing a tee in the ground as you normally would. Now put a second tee about two inches behind and to the inside of that tee relative to the target line. Then place the third tee two inches in front and to the outside of the original tee, relative to the target line. Now all you have to do is practice swinging so that you clip all three tees. You could even try hitting all three tees out of the ground in one fell swoop.
